Boyce Bulletin for Wednesday, November 20, 2019

November 19, 2019

Dear Boyce Families:

As you know, we have been working to implement ALICE training throughout all Upper St. Clair schools to ensure that our students are prepared in an age and developmentally-appropriate way for any type of emergency. Our students have participated in training, and we will conduct our first ALICE safety drill this week.

Our ALICE safety drill will take place this Thursday, November 21, 2019, and will include a building lockdown drill, much like we have done in the past. Unlike our current practice with fire drills, our staff and students are aware that the lockdown drill is scheduled so that everyone involved can focus on preparedness in the event of an emergency.

Please take some time to talk with your child about the importance of this training and his/her role in helping to keep our school a safe and welcoming place to teach and learn. If your child has any concerns about the safety of our school and/or a classmate, please encourage him/her to reach out to a school police officer, a school counselor, a teacher or an administrator. We are all here to help.

If your child is not comfortable sharing information directly, safety concerns can be reported anonymously via the Safe2Say Something program. There are three ways to submit information:

  • Call the tip line:  1-844-SAF2SAY (1-844-723-2729)
  • Use the website:  www.safe2saypa.org
  • Use the mobile app available for Apple and Android device

As always, you are welcome and encouraged to contact us with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your ongoing partnership as we work to ensure that all Upper St. Clair schools provide an excellent experience for all.

Sincerely,

Dan O’Rourke                                                               Christine M. Mussomeli

Boyce Bulletin for Monday, October 7, 2019

October 7, 2019

Dear 5th Grade Boyce Families:

Starting this school year, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) will be administered to all fifth-grade students at Boyce Middle School. The standardized test, which provides valuable data to measure scholastic achievement across all ages, will be administered on October 15, 2019. Your child’s individual score report will be mailed home mid-school year.

There is no required preparation for this test. The best way to assist your child is to be sure that he or she gets a good night’s sleep the night before the test, eats a nutritious breakfast on the morning of October 15 and arrives to school on time. We will all work together to help your child feel relaxed and confident before and during the test administration. The school schedule will be slightly modified on October 15 as well.

Thank you for your continued support in assuring success for your child. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school counselor, Mrs. Tonia Autieri at 412-833-1600 x5010 or tautieri@uscsd.k12.pa.us, if you have any specific questions regarding the OLSAT administration.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

October 7, 2019

Dear 6th Grade Boyce Families:
Our school is taking part in the 2019 Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) sponsored by the Pennsylvania
Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and the
Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs. The survey will ask questions about the
behaviors of students in the 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades, including questions about school climate,
violence, depression, bullying, and substance abuse.

The information we receive will assist us and our community partners in working to prevent adolescent
drug use and other problem behaviors. We want to ensure that all parents and caregivers are notified that
the survey is being conducted and provide you with as much information about the survey as possible. As
a parent or caregiver, you have the right to prohibit your child’s participation. The following facts about
the survey will help you make an informed decision about your child’s participation:

-Participation in this survey is completely voluntary. Students will be instructed by their proctor
that they can skip any questions they do not understand or choose not to answer. If they have any
questions or concerns after taking this survey, they are instructed to talk with their school
counselor or a trusted adult.
-The survey is designed to protect each student’s privacy. It is anonymous and confidential.
Students will not put their names on the survey, and no student will ever have their individual
responses reported.
-The survey is well tested, having been administered to over 1,000,000 Pennsylvania students
since the 1990’s. The information collected has proved invaluable to prevention planners in
selecting programming to promote healthy youth development.

You can request a list of the survey questions by visiting this link: http://episcenter.psu.edu/node/599.
For more information about the survey, including a list of Frequently Asked Questions, please visit
www.pays.pa.gov then click on “2019.” The survey will be administered to all 6th grade students the
morning of October 15th and will take about one hour to complete.. If you do not want your child to
participate, please submit your request to Amy Antonio at aantonio@uscsd.k12.pa.us.
Thank you for your help in our efforts to keep our schools drug free and safe for learning. If you have any
questions, please contact Amy Antonio at 412-833-1600 or aantonio@uscsd.k12.pa.us. Thank you.

Sincerely,

May/June 2019

Dear Boyce Middle School Families:

As the 2018-19 school year closes, we would like to extend our sincere appreciation for a successful year. We hope you and your child can reflect and identify several exciting, happy and proud moments from this school year. It has been great getting to know our fifth-grade students and parents, and to build stronger relationships with our sixth-grade families. We are so proud of our student’s growth and efforts!

If you are a parent of a fifth grader, we look forward to having your child return to Boyce in August. Sixth grade will be filled with more academic rigor and growing opportunities. It is always amazing to see how much maturity occurs between the fifth and sixth grade. To our sixth-grade families, best wishes as your child enters the next level of middle school at Fort Couch – it will be an exciting transition. Your children are prepared and ready for this new beginning!

We would like to congratulate our students, staff and community for our recent Pittsburgh Business Times ranking as the No. 1 school district in southwestern Pennsylvania! Additionally, Boyce Middle School’s 2019 regional ranking, where fifth grade ranked No. 2 and sixth grade ranked No. 3, was the highest collective ranking ever at Boyce Middle School. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students and recognize that this ranking could never be possible without the outstanding support of our USC families and community members. Thank you for being such outstanding educational partners. In keeping with our theme of “Enhancing Excellence,” we will continue to search for ways to provide an even better educational experience for our students.

The end of the school year is always the busiest. We are happy to provide some very unique opportunities for our students, and appreciate their participation.

Thank you for sharing these special moments with us, and thank you to our staff members for organizing and delivering these opportunities for our students:

  • Boyce Celebration of Learning
  • Musicals
  • Spring Concerts (Band and Orchestra)
  • Deer Valley
  • NASA Trips
  • Fourth and Sixth Grade Move-up Events
  • Sixth Grade Boyce Graduation Party @ Fort Couch
  • Fifth Grade Civil War Day
  • Boyce PRIDE
  • Boyce Field Day
  • Panther Paw Awards
  • Student Last Day Celebrations (and a surprise Kona Ice Party for sixth graders)

Please note that final Report Cards will be available on the Parent Portal/Vision Portal beginning Wednesday, June 26.

We will be at Boyce throughout the summer – getting ready to welcome our students for the 2019-20 school year. As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Enjoy and best wishes for a restful and safe summer!

Respectfully,

Dan O’Rourke                                                              Christine M. Mussomeli

1,000th Day of School Activities: Celebrating a 5th Grade Millennial Milestone!

The 100th day of the school year marks a special milestone for our Boyce fifth graders. In fifth grade, the 100th day of school is also the 1,000th day of school from kindergarten through fifth grade. To celebrate this occasion, fifth graders at Boyce worked together on their teams to donate a total of 1,000 quarters. Each of our fifth grade teams accomplished this goal and $1,000 will be donated to USCHS Mini-THON. Mini-THON is a 12-hour dance marathon, which raises money for Four Diamonds. Four Diamonds is a charity that donates $0.91 of every dollar fundraised toward conquering childhood cancer.

Valentine Grams

In conjunction with Random Acts of Kindness Week, Boyce Student Council sold Valentine Grams through Feb. 13 to benefit the USCHS Mini-THON. Because of the generous contributions from our Boyce students and community, we exceeded our fundraising goal and donated $1,040 to USCHS Mini-THON. Thank you!

The Upper St. Clair Youth Steering Committee (“YSC”) is holding a BOYCE party called WINTER BLAST on February 23, 2019!

Fall 2018 Box Tops Collection starts Monday October 1st!

It is time to start collecting those box tops again! Start clipping Box Tops today to help Boyce Middle School. Every Box Tops clip is worth 10¢ and quickly adds up to earn cash to buy anything we need for our students. Last year Boyce Middle School earned $726.10 and this school year our goal is to earn $1000.00.

To help our school, just look for pink Box Tops on products that you buy, clip them, and send them to school with your child to drop in their classroom’s collection bag. For more information on the Box Tops for Education program, including a list of participating products and our school’s progress, visit www.BTFE.com.

Each classroom will be asked to bring in as many Box Tops as they can over a 3 week period beginning on Monday October 1st and ending on Friday October 19th. The team who brings in the most Box Tops will be awarded with extra recess time. So parents, please start clipping those Box Tops now and send them in with your child so that we can raise funds for Boyce Middle School PTO programs.

Boyce Bulletin for Wednesday, September 26, 2018

1)  Boyce Middle School will hold its annual Open House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018.  Open House is a great opportunity for teachers to communicate key information about Boyce Middle School.  Throughout the evening parents will learn about the curricula, course offerings, and teacher expectations.  The goal is for parents to understand what their child’s experience will be like at Boyce and how they can help provide support for a successful year.

Please understand that due to the format of the evening, this is not a time for individual conferences.  If you would like an opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers, please call the main office to schedule a conference.  Additionally, this evening is designed for parents only.

In order to help introduce you to the vast learning experiences your child will experience at Boyce, a schedule was developed for you to follow.  Individual teachers or teams of teachers will present important information about their classes (e.g., curriculum, expectations, types of communication).  This schedule will be given to your child to bring home to you.  We will also have additional schedules in the front lobby that evening.

Parking will be available by the baseball field, the back of the school, and the side lots, but will be limited. Therefore, a shuttle will be running from Streams Elementary School to Boyce starting at 6:45 p.m. and concluding at 9:15 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 27, 2018.

Respectfully,

Dan O’Rourke, Principal & Christine M. Mussomeli, Assistant Principal

PLEASE NOTE: Students will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. on September 27

If you would like to receive more information regarding the music ensembles offered at Boyce, please plan to attend the presentation by Mr. Madge, Mr. Lang, and Mrs. Shoemaker in the Boyce Theatre at 6:00 p.m.

Open House Schedules have been distributed to the students and will also be available in the office.

September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month. The girls high school soccer teams (JV and Varsity) will participate in a "Green Out Game" in conjunction with NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) Keystone PA and AFSP (The American Foundation on Suicide Prevention).

Both NAMI and AFSP will be on hand at the game with materials and important take away information.

Part of the USC Wellness Committee's mission is to make sure the students of USC are healthy - both physically and mentally. This is such an important cause and we are VERY fortunate to have these resources working with our community!

5)  5th Grade iPad Distribution

We hope that your 2018-19 school-year is off to a great start! There are a number of exciting changes in the district at the beginning of each new year – including your child’s transition to middle school. As your now fifth grader settles in at Boyce Middle School, we want to provide you with information regarding our 1:1 Learning Initiative, which encompasses students in grades 5-12.

In this program, all students receive a district-issued iPad to support their learning both at school and at home. To kick off this program (and to give your child access to his/her device) we invite parents/guardians to the iPad distribution on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Boyce Middle School. Plans for the evening’s activities are included below.

Agenda for Wednesday, Sept. 12

5:30 – 8 p.m.

iPad Distribution, Boyce Middle School Library

Distribution of iPads will take place from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Library at Boyce Middle School.

Parents/guardians are the only individuals who are permitted to pick up their child's device.

Depending on the volume of parents who arrive at any given time, this process could take up to 30 minutes.

To expedite this process, parents are encouraged to complete their online Technology Protection Plan election prior to arriving.

Click here for information about the Technology Protection Plan

7 – 7:30 p.m.

Informational Session, Boyce Middle School Theatre

Building and district administrators will share key information about the 1:1 Learning Initiative from 7 – 7:30 p.m.

We recognize that many fifth graders have older siblings already accustomed to the 1:1 program and their parents have attended one or more previous sessions. Therefore, this informational session is not mandatory, but we encourage all families new to 1:1 to attend.

Can't Attend?

If you are unable to attend this presentation, we will provide a handout with key details regarding 1:1, and a screen-recording of this presentation on the 1:1 Learning Initiative website

For students whose parents are unable to attend the iPad Distribution on Sept. 12, iPads will be distributed during the school day beginning Sept. 13. In order to receive his/her iPad, the student’s parents must have completed the online Technology Protection Plan Agreement (opt-in or opt-out).

We will follow up with an email reminder to fifth-grade families in the days leading up to the event, which will include a few more details about this process. If you have any questions about iPad distribution or the 1:1 Learning Initiative, please visit https://www.uscsd.k12.pa.us/Page/11230, and your inquiry will be forwarded to the appropriate individuals.

6)  The Boyce Scholastic Book Fair will be held September 26-28. Please see the schedule for details:  Scholastic Book Fair Schedule

BOYCE BULLETIN FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2018

1) Car Rider Safety Guidelines for Parents:

To ensure the safety of students who are car riders, and after consultation with the Director of Transportation and District Police, the car rider procedure is for students to enter their parent’s cars via curbside pickup only on the right side of the building.  Students are not permitted to walk to cars that are parked in or near the parking spaces to the right of the building.  We ask that parents pull to the right side of the building create a "u-line," wait until cars that are curbside load and leave before taking their turn to pull next to the curb to pick-up their child. This was determined to be the safest plan and most efficient plan for car riders. Boyce staff members are assigned to this location to assist with this procedure.  Please see one of them if you have any questions.

Additionally, as a reminder, if your child is a car rider, please make sure you are not parking in the parking lot in front of the school building.  Please follow the protocol above as to avoid having your son/daughter cross the bus lane in order to get to your parked vehicle.

We appreciate your assistance and cooperation.

2) Binder Reminder and Activity Fee Reminder

This is a friendly reminder that the $30 Student Activity Fee is due by Thursday, August 30th.  Checks can be made out to BOYCE MIDDLE SCHOOL PTO and can be sent to school with your child.

In addition to providing most of the funding for PTO programs at Boyce, the Student Activity Fee entitles each student to his/her own Boyce Middle School Binder Reminder.  The Binder Reminder is a spiral-bound planner utilized daily by the classroom teachers.  The Student Activity Fee must be paid in order for your student to receive the Binder Reminder daily planner.  The daily planners will be distributed to the students on Thursday, August 30.  For absent students, there will be additional distributions on Friday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 4.
Questions?  Contact Kathy Ginsburg for 5th graders at kathyginsburg@yahoo.com and Erin Guarino for 6th graders at barring887@yahoo.com

Please see attachment for Activity Fee Form and PTO Membership Form:    Student Activity Fee/PTO Membership Forms

3) Boyce School Picture Day:  Bring your smile and your order form on Friday, September 14.  Lifetouch Picture Day Flyers/Order Forms wil be coming home with students.

4)  Boyce has a new water bottle policy for students which we have also posted as a headline on our homepage:

All students and staff have access to water fountains throughout the school building. Our water fountains are cleaned regularly, properly maintained, and accessible to everyone.  We recognize that students may need additional hydration throughout the school day. Students are permitted to have refillable water bottles in class.  At the discretion of the classroom teacher, students may lose this privilege if the water bottle becomes a distraction to the learning environment.

General Guidelines for Water Bottle Usage at Boyce MS:

Students are permitted to carry water bottles at Boyce Middle School

Students are only permitted to have WATER in the water bottle

Reusable/ refillable bottles are preferred

If the water bottle is interfering with the learning of the student/ other students the teacher will ask the student to remove the water bottle from the classroom (i.e. put the bottle in their locker)

Water bottles should be kept under the students' desks and away from any technology and/ or device
