Welcome Back! Remote learning begins Thursday, April 2

March 30, 2020

Dear Fort Couch Families:

Remote Learning Welcome back to [remote learning] school at Fort Couch Middle School! Our teachers are excited to return to teaching and learning, and, most importantly, having daily interaction with our students. As you’ve heard from Dr. Rozzo, our team has been working hard to design and create a program that will enable our students to keep learning during this time apart.

Remote learning – what to expect
Our teachers and students will be utilizing Canvas, our learning management system, for daily assignments and grading. We’ve been using this system all year so this should be a seamless transition. Teachers will be using a variety of assignments, instructional videos, video-conferencing and other strategies to provide students opportunities to learn, practice and complete assignments.

Student & Family Expectations
Teachers are working to craft learning experiences for students in each course, from English Language Arts to French to Art. Students should expect to spend approximately 30 minutes each day in English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Assignments will be posted every day in these courses in Canvas. Students should also expect to spend approximately 30 minutes two to three times per week for their World Language, Expressive Arts, and Physical Education courses. Assignments will be posted weekly in these courses in Canvas.

Student Support Services
Our student support services professionals [special education teachers, school psychologists, school counselors, school nurses, gifted teachers, and ESL teachers] will communicate directly with families of students who receive specialized support and services to coordinate the necessary services for your child. Given the transition to an online learning platform, we have developed a framework for how these services will be delivered to your child. By the end of the first week of online instruction you will receive further communication from the student support services professionals who work with your child.

Teacher Office Hours
Communication is key to the success of our remote learning program. All teachers will have designated Office Hours when students and families can connect with teachers to have questions answered or assignments clarified. Teacher Office Hours will be posted on their Canvas pages. In addition, beyond designated Office Hours, families can expect to hear back from teachers within 24 hours of an inquiry. Remote learning is new for all of us. Let’s keep the lines of communication open so that we can work together for our common goal --- doing what’s best for our community’s children.

Daily/Weekly Schedule
Each student must check in daily by 10:00 a.m. using a simple Google form that will be linked in Canvas. This form will require students to be logged into their USCSD email account. By completing this simple form, students will be counted as present for the day. After checking in, students should visit their teachers’ Canvas pages to review lessons, activities, and details regarding the expectations for the day.  Students and families have the option to connect with teachers during scheduled office hours.

As we begin this journey into remote learning, please keep in mind that this is unchartered territory for everyone. Patience, understanding and open communication are key to a successful transition. If you have a question or suggestion, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher, school counselor, or one of us. We are committed to our students’ successful completion of this year’s coursework and their preparation for their academic journey ahead!

Sincerely,

Mr. Joseph DeMar
Principal
