School board approves 2019-20 calendar

2019-20 Calendar The Upper St. Clair School Board approved the 2019-20 calendar during its meeting on Monday, Feb. 25, 2019. The calendar includes several adjustments that were based on feedback from the community.

Among the notable changes is the rescheduling of the in-service days in late October. Rather than students being off on Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29, the in-service days have been moved to Thursday and Friday of that week – spanning Halloween and the day after.

“Overwhelmingly, this was the most requested change to the proposed calendar,” Dr. John Rozzo, superintendent of schools, said. “We received a lot of great feedback from parents as well as staff members. We appreciate their input in this process and worked diligently to include their suggestions where we could.”

Given that Upper St. Clair has had four snow days so far this year, snow make-up days were an expressed concern for some. The Monday following Easter – April 13 – is now a designated snow make-up day.

“Having a snow make-up day during the school year provides us some flexibility to ensure that our high school seniors attain the required number of instructional days,” Dr. Rozzo said.

The first day of school for students is Monday, Aug. 26, 2019. Pending the need for snow make-up days, the last day of the school for students is set for Tuesday, June 9, 2020, and high school commencement will be held on Thursday, June 4.

In response to positive feedback from families and staff, Thanksgiving recess will once again include Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27-29. School will resume the following Monday, Dec. 2.

Winter Break begins on Monday, Dec. 23 and continues through Wednesday, Jan. 1. A 10-day spring break is set for the week preceding Easter and includes the following Monday. Students would be off school starting on Monday, April 6 with students returning to school on Tuesday, April 14. Note that Monday, April 13 is a possible snow make-up day.

The 2019-20 calendar is available on the district’s website.

Proposed revision to 2018-19 calendar…

Dr. Rozzo also presented his recommendation to have the school board “forgive” three of the four school cancellations that were due to inclement weather. The Pennsylvania Department of Education requires 180 instructional days. Upper St. Clair School District schedules 183 days – providing the district with some flexibility.

The 2018-19 school calendar currently slates the last day of school for students as Tuesday, June 11. A proposed revision to the 2018-19 school calendar will be presented to the school board in March with a recommended last student day of Wednesday, June 12, pending any additional school cancellations. Graduation would remain Thursday, June 6.
