Art & Writing Contest open to grades 7-12

Arts in USC The Upper St. Clair PTC, high school PTSO and Fort Couch PTSO are promoting the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards contest for students in grades 7-12. Enter and you may have a shot at joining the esteemed ranks of former winners/now famous artists including Andy Warhol, Ken Burns and Lena Dunham.

Signed artwork submission forms must be postmarked by Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, and writing entries must be received by Friday, Dec. 14, 2018. Works of art are photographed by the artist and then submitted online to the Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards for judging. Writing submissions are also submitted electronically. All rules and regulations for both art and submissions are available online at www.artandwriting.org.

The USC PTC will reimburse the $5 registration fee for the first 10 high school students and the first 10 Fort Couch students. To request reimbursement, email a copy of the submission form to artsinusc@gmail.com.

Submissions are blindly adjudicated by leaders in the visual and literary arts. Jurors look for works that exemplify the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ core values: originality, technical skill, and the emergence of personal voice or vision.

Art entries are part of the Pittsburgh Arts Region. Students receiving regional award recognition will be notified by email no later than Jan. 30, 2019. All students earning Honorable Mention, Silver Key and Gold Key awards will be recognized with an award certificate at a celebration on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the Community College of Allegheny County, North Campus.

Pittsburgh Writing Region awards will be announced in early February. The awards ceremony for top area writing contest winners is set for 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The Alliance is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the awards program, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships. Students across America submitted 350,000 original works last year in 29 different categories of art and writing.

Since the Scholastic Art & Writing Award program’s founding in 1923, it has fostered the creativity and talent of millions of students, including renowned alumni who have gone on to become leaders in their fields, including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Philip Pearlstein, Stephen King and Sylvia Plath. More recently, Richard Linklater, Zac Posen and Lena Dunham received Scholastic Art & Writing Awards when they were teens.
