High school supports fallen officer’s family
Upper St. Clair High School students are selling buttons to honor fallen Canonsburg Police Officer Scott Bashioum. Buttons can be purchased in the high school nutrition center during lunch.
The round buttons are a black and white American flag with a single blue ribbon across the center along with the officer’s name Scott Bashioum and EOW 11/10/16 written below in blue. EOW is an acronym for End of Watch, which is used to signify the date that an officer was killed in the line of duty.
The cost is $5 – $4 of which will be donated to Officer Bashioum’s family. The remaining $1 covers the cost of making the buttons, which were designed and produced by SHOP@USC students.SHOP@USC
(Showing How Opportunity Pays @ Upper St. Clair) is a fully-inclusive student-run business housed within Upper St. Clair High School’s Innovation Hub. Students in the Life Skills program and their regular education partners design and manufacture USC spirit-wear products while learning how to develop a business plan that includes all aspects such as pricing, marketing, sales and inventory of products.
Senior Isabella Oprison was a major catalyst in this initiative. The project was student-suggested, student-designed and student-produced.
According to Michelle Zirngibl, SHOP@USC coordinator, service learning projects are important because they teach students that it is important to give back, especially in times of need.
“This devastating incident has affected all of us in some way and many of us were feeling powerless,” Mrs. Zirngibl said. “This project has provided our students a way to feel like they are doing something to help.”
