    SCRATCH – Programming

    For students currently in grades 5-8

    This course will provide adventures in computer game programming with SCRATCH. Even middle school students can learn the basics of computer programming without any experience. Students will use programming techniques to create animations, games, and interactive activities using the SCRATCH programming language created by the M.I.T. media lab.

    High School STEAM Academy

    For students currently in grades 8-11

    High School Credit: One (1) Elective Credit
    The academy provides students experience in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). Students will select one of the following courses:   Chemistry and Art,  FabLab - Forms and Fluctuations or Sculpture – Abstract In Its Natural Form courses can be counted toward MYP technology elective requirement. (Students should bring their own lunch each day.)
    • Chemistry and Art: Unleash your inner artist – and learn some chemistry too. How can Art and Chemistry be related? This interdisciplinary course investigates the science of materials that go into the making of art media and materials. It also develops the student’s artistic knowledge and skills while completing a studio art project that reinforces the chemical properties that they are learning.
    • Sculpture – Abstract In Its Natural Form: Explore what can happen when you blend synthetic materials and the natural world. Here you will discover the possibilities of creating a sculpture that is influenced by our environment. Various processes and materials will be used, including GMAW / MIG welding. Create a sculpture that is in motion and inspired by the world around us.
    • FabLab - Forms and Fluctuations:  Start with an idea and then turn it into reality using the FabLab and digital fabrication. Begin with a group projects and then design and fabricate a personal project using the CNC routers, laser engravers, and 3D printers.

    Boyce Middle School Leadership Academy

    The "Boyce" Middle School Leadership Academy is a one-week summer experience, offering students exposure to leadership concepts and practices. Through hands-on activities, group projects, and reflection opportunities, the students will learn about important leadership qualities and how these can be used to help them in their everyday lives.

    The USCHS Leadership Academy is a one-week summer workshop offering students exposure to leadership concepts and practices.  Students identify their leadership strengths and learn how these skills can be used to make them successful in all stages of life.  Through experiential learning strategies, group projects, and hands-on activities, students experience the application of leadership skills, building confidence in their abilities and enhancing their capacity to serve in leadership roles.  Students leave the USCHS Leadership Academy with a Personalized Leadership Plan to assist with their development of leadership skills in the future.  The Leadership Academy is open to all 2018-2019 USC High School students.  *Note - Students must take the Leadership Academy in sequential order: I, then II, then III.

    STEAM Creative Design

    This STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) camp is designed to challenge students' creative thinking and critical thinking skills by utilizing the STEAM Room and Makerspace located at Boyce Middle School. The activities during the week promote curiosity, creativity, artistic expression, collaboration, communication, problem solving and design thinking. This hands-on approach to learning allows students to learn from their mistakes and improve their growth mindset.

    Surviving Mars

    For students currently in grades 6-7

    • Location: Fort Couch Middle School

    This camp is designed for middle school students interested in exploring inquiry based engineering projects.  Participants will be divided into groups with a common goal of using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math skills to solve challenges using the design cycle.  Each group will face challenges to survive on a deserted island.  The culminating event will be an application of the general laws of physics experienced at Flight Trampoline Park in Bridgeville.

    Ingenuity Camp

    For students currently in grades 1-7

    Ingenuity Camp is an exciting exploration which trains the brain to think creatively! Summer 2019 theme features physics elements, building structures, and creative construction. Participants work in teams to write, design, and build a creative solution to an open-ended problem. Camp activities foster divergent thinking, risk taking, and collaboration in an atmosphere which rewards thinking “outside the box!” Daily workshops plus loads of fun and creativity! Friday Family Showcase lets the teams perform their solutions.

    Fort Couch Band Camp

    For students currently in grades 6-7

    • 8:30 - 11:30 AM
    • Location:  Fort Couch Middle School

    The “Fort Couch” Middle School Band Camp is for all students, currently in grades 6-7,  that perform with a minimum of one-year experience performing on a wind or percussion instrument. Each student will participate in a small group lessons and music theory classes, based on their level of experience, as well as full ensemble rehearsals each day. There will be a theme for each day of the week (e.g., FUNdamentals Day, Jazz Day, Marching/Pep Band Day) that culminates in a concert/recital on Friday (6/21) morning. This camp will also review the audition materials for the auditioned ensembles (Symphonic Winds and Jazz Band) at Fort Couch Middle School. This is an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their music skills in the summer, meet new friends, and prepare for the upcoming school year!

    Boyce Band Camp

    For students currently in grades 4-5

    The “Boyce” Middle School Band Camp is for all students, currently in grades 4-5, with some experience (e.g., Elementary Band) performing on a wind or percussion instrument. Each student will participate in small group lessons with music theory classes, based on their level of experience, as well as full ensemble rehearsals each day. This is a great musical experience to meet new friends from the other other elementary schools as well as prepare students for the Boyce Band Program at the beginning of the school year.
