Outlined below are guidelines to follow in preparation for summer cleaning within the district. These guidelines not only will help in preparation for the cleaning of the schools during the summer but will also provide guidelines on what will be permitted on district property.

Many of the requests made in the guidelines are necessary and relate to safety and sanitary issues that have been developing over the years. In order to prevent unsafe conditions and maintain orderly facilities your cooperation is needed and is greatly appreciated.

The Upper St. Clair School District Safety Committee would like to remind you of the following safety tips:

  1. Keep walkways and aisles clear of all obstructions.

  2. Do NOT climb or stand on chairs, shelves or tables. Step stools are available for all employees through the building librarian or high school curriculum leader.

  3. Do NOT lift heavy items. Call your building head custodian or head secretary to get you assistance before lifting heavy items.

  4. Spills should be immediately cleaned up and wet floor signs used.
Please take personal initiative to eliminate hazards and/or reduce the likelihood of a slip/trip and fall accident. Feel free to contact the Custodial Department for assistance in cleaning any spills and lifting heavy objects.

Guidelines to Prepare Classrooms/Areas for Summer Cleaning

The areas listed below MUST be cleared and emptied for summer cleaning:
  • Windows sills
  • Walls
  • Bulletin Boards
  • Tops of File Cabinets
  • Tops of Bookshelves and Bookcases
  • Top of Teacher’s Desk
  • Tops of all Student Desks
  • Tops of Tables
Please place all personal and classroom items remaining in the classroom over the summer in boxes or plastic bags for easy moving. Boxes and plastic bags should be placed on the floor in one area of the classroom. Classroom displays such as bulletin board, classroom reading libraries, book displays, models, etc. need to be dismantled and boxed also.

All personal items must be secured in boxes or plastic bags.

Surplus items and boxes are not to be stacked on top of built-in wall cabinets and bookcases or free-standing file cabinets or bookcases in classrooms, science storage areas or planning areas. All personal obsolete materials, equipment, etc. should be disposed of. District-owned equipment that is obsolete must be reported to the building principal so it can be declared surplus by school board policy first before final disposition.

Any questions concerning a specific item should be directed to the building administrator.
