Three Upper St. Clair Future Problem Solving teams were among the top performers at the 2025 State Bowl, held April 11-12 in Camp Hill, Pa.

The Fort Couch Middle School team finished second in the commonwealth and the two Upper St. Clair High School teams placed second and third.  

Team members included:

  • Fort Couch, 2nd place: Seth Pedretti, Owen Maher, Will Kreizenbeck and Nick Heitman
  • USCHS, 2nd place: Prachi Chetlur, Owen Bell, Sydney Waldron and Frankie Dubreil
  • USCHS, 3rd place: Sofia Alfredson Themudo, Madison Kovacs, Sara Gillespie and Kaia Petrick

The State Bowl problem focused on solving probable issues that could occur with regard to nanotechnology. 

Future Problem Solving is a research-based program introduced by Dr. E. Paul Torrance that consists of a six-step process through which students address complex issues and develop solutions. The program teaches problem-solving strategies, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, decision-making skills, and effective communication.

The teams are led by gift education teachers Jason O’Roark and Casey Teagarden, from Fort Couch Middle School and Upper St. Clair High School respectively.
