Six tapped for honors orchestra

Six Upper St. Clair High School musicians have been selected to perform with the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 1 Honors Orchestra.

The students are:

  • Ava Liu, grade 11: viola
  • Sunny Liu, grade 9: viola
  • Matthew Pfeiffer, grade 9: viola
  • Skanda Sathya Vagheeswar, grade 11: violin
  • Elena Wetzel, grade 12: violin
  • Yuzuki Watanabe, grade 12: violin

The students study under the direction of Karen Chisholm, USCHS orchestra director.

The PMEA District 1 Honors Orchestra festival will be held Nov. 15-16, 2025, at Carson Middle School in the North Allegheny School District. The culminating concert is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at Carson Middle School.

Serving as guest conductor is Scott Laird, instructor of music and chair of fine arts at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

PMEA District 1 includes schools from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Students selected for District ensembles may qualify to advance to Region, All-State, Eastern Division, and National NAfME ensembles.
