A former Upper St. Clair High School locker room has been transformed into a fully functional apartment designed to help students develop the skills they need to live more independently.

The USC Independence & Wellness Suite – Apartment 404A was created this summer by the district’s maintenance team as an immersive learning environment for students in the high school’s special education programs. The space includes a kitchen, laundry facilities, bathroom, bedroom and living areas, providing students with opportunities to practice everyday tasks in a safe, supportive setting.

“This controlled, immersive environment bridges the gap between classroom instruction and real-world health and autonomy,” Dr. Rachel Andler Plovic, director of special education, said. “By mastering daily living tasks in a simulated home setting, students gain the confidence and functional skills necessary for post-secondary success.”

While the suite looks and feels like a home, it functions as a hands-on learning laboratory.

In the kitchen, students can use the refrigerator, oven, microwave and dishwasher to practice meal preparation while learning about nutrition, food safety and sanitation. The washer and dryer provide opportunities to develop skills related to clothing care and household responsibilities. The functional bathroom supports instruction in personal care and hygiene.

The living and bedroom areas provide space for students to work on organization, stress management, sleep hygiene and other skills that contribute to maintaining a healthy living environment.

Access to the suite will be based on students’ individual independent-living goals as outlined in their individualized education programs (IEPs). Students from multiple special education programs, including life skills support, emotional support and learning support, may benefit from the space. Approximately 190 students receiving special education services attend Upper St. Clair High School.

The suite is designed to help students build confidence and independence before they transition from high school into adulthood.

“The immediate impact is on our juniors and seniors, whose transition into adulthood is quickly approaching,” Dr. Andler Plovic said. “These individuals often face ‘the cliff’ after graduation – a sudden loss of structure and support. By providing a safe, supervised environment to fail and then succeed at daily tasks (cooking, cleaning, self-care), we are replacing anxiety with competence. They gain the physical and mental health foundations necessary to pursue jobs, local volunteer positions, and independent living.”

The benefits also can extend beyond the students themselves.

Caregivers of students with disabilities often provide significant support with everyday tasks. As students become more capable of managing those responsibilities independently, families can experience a shift toward greater independence and a more balanced dynamic.

“When a student masters the ability to do their own laundry or prepare a simple, healthy meal, it shifts the family dynamic from constant caregiving to supported independence,” Dr. Andler Plovic said.

The suite also represents a long-term investment in the district’s ability to prepare students with diverse learning needs for life after high school.

“A community is only as strong as its most vulnerable members,” Dr. Andler Plovic said. “Students who graduate with functional life skills are more likely to remain in Upper St. Clair as active, contributing residents. Whether they are entering the local workforce or participating in civic life, they do so as healthier, more self-sufficient neighbors.”

The space will continue to serve students for years to come, providing a dedicated environment where they can learn, practice and build upon essential life skills.

“As the population of students with diverse learning needs grows, the high school will already have the infrastructure in place to support them, ensuring Upper St. Clair remains a premier, inclusive destination for families,” Dr. Andler Plovic added.

Members of the school district’s Facilities and Operations staff completed the work to transform the space throughout the summer, providing their time and expertise to help make the USC Independence & Wellness Suite – Apartment 404A a reality while minimizing costs to the district. The Community Foundation of Upper St. Clair further supported the project with a $4,250 grant to help purchase appliances for the suite.
