Fourth Graders Turn Research Into Action at IB Exhibition Day

As the capstone experience of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Inquiry Exhibition challenges students to investigate real-world issues, develop a deeper understanding of their chosen topics and take action based on their learning.

Parents, administrators, teachers and members of the school community visited student exhibits to learn about the research process, hear presentations and discover how students transformed their learning into service and advocacy efforts.

“Our fourth-grade students have invested remarkable dedication, curiosity and passion into their inquiries,” Lauren Bogus, PYP co-coordinator and second-grade teacher, said. “They were truly excited to showcase their learning with both our school community and beyond.”

This year's exhibition theme focused on honoring veterans and exploring organizations that support veterans and their families. Through their research, students learned about the challenges veterans may face and the resources available to assist them.

Organizations highlighted in student projects included America's VetDogs, Veterans Leadership Program, Wounded Warrior Project and Soldiers' Angels.

Throughout the process, students worked with teachers, mentors and family members to conduct research, ask meaningful questions and identify ways they could make a positive impact through action.

“It was an exciting day filled with lots of enthusiasm, joy and pride from all involved with the projects, including the students, families, mentors and lead teachers who had helped them along their learning journey,” Rebecca Smith, PYP co-coordinator and resource teacher, said. 

The fourth-grade teaching team – Amy Barker, Rachel Daum, Anne DiDesiderio, Carolyn Fortson and Amanda Royer – guided students through each stage of the inquiry process, helping them connect classroom learning with authentic community engagement.

The IB Primary Years Programme at Streams Elementary emphasizes student inquiry, critical thinking and action. The annual Inquiry Exhibition serves as a powerful demonstration of those principles, empowering students to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways while developing the skills and confidence to make a difference in their community.
