The MATHCOUNTS competition is a national mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of engaging rounds of problems. At the Pittsburgh Chapter event, all students participated in the Sprint Round, completing 30 problems. It was followed by the Target Round, with multi-step problems, requiring advanced reasoning.

One team of four students from each school competed in the Team Round, allowing for group collaboration. The culmination of the competition was the Countdown Round, a fast-paced competition for the top 10-scoring individuals.  In this round, pairs of “Mathletes” compete against each other and the clock.

The Upper St. Clair students were led by Jason O’Roark, gifted and accelerated math teacher.

In addition to the second-place team members, the following Upper St. Clair students participated: Ben Fang, Darsh Kakkad, Wyatt Eannarino, Mateo Lin, Claire Dietiker, Will Kreizenbeck, Mira Murthy, Owen Maher, Alex Zhang and Aaden Wang.

“The students solved their way through many math problem-solving sessions throughout the first half of the school year to prepare,” Mr. O’Roark said. “Congratulations to all our competitors who qualified, practiced, and represented Upper St. Clair.”
