Five selected for Honors Jazz Festival

Five Upper St. Clair High School students were recently selected, through a competitive audition process, to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 1 Honors Jazz Festival.

Selected students include:

  • Edwin Krofcheck - Tenor 1, Band 1
  • Thomas Mallison - Trombone 3, Band 2
  • Anthony Mastro - Trombone 3, Band 1
  • Michaela Pacella - Piano, Band 1
  • Andy Scherer - Alto 1, Band 2

All five musicians are members of the USCHS Honors Jazz Ensemble, directed by Nick Deutsch, band director.

Hosted by Franklin Regional High School, the PMEA District 1 Honors Jazz Festival will take place Dec. 12-13, 2025, at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. This year's guest conductors are Jeff Bush, area coordinator of jazz studies at Duquesne University, and Clint Bleil, assistant professor of music at Seton Hill University. 

PMEA District 1 includes schools from Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Students selected for District ensembles may qualify to advance to Region, All-State, Eastern Division, and National NAfME ensembles.
