Scoring a perfect 30/30, The Athletes finished first among the sixth-grade teams. The team included Mae Bosbach, Greyson Miller, Urja Parekar, Presley Burch, Giorgia Memo and Lydia Giuffre.

In the fifth-grade bracket, The Novel Knights prevailed with a score of 29.5/30. The three-person team included Veer Bhargava, Kiyaan Mendhi and Aadit Patel.

Organized by Boyce librarian Morgan Olsen, the annual event is a book-based quiz competition.

“Over 160 participated in the Battle of the Books event, and I am proud of each of them,” Mrs. Olsen said. “The overall scores this year were very high, which shows a great level of commitment and reading! Many of the teams only missed two or three of the 30 questions asked.”

The school’s fifth and sixth graders create teams to read a selection of books to correctly answer related questions.

“I try to include a variety of genres and reading levels, so there is something for everyone,” Mrs. Olsen said.

This year’s books included The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown, One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, Nothing Else But Miracles by Kate Albus, Force of Nature by Ann E. Burg, and Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan.

Mrs. Olsen finds that the annual Battle of the Books competition provides students with the opportunity to explore new titles, genres and authors.

“It encourages students to read more and read for fun,” she said. “Battle of the Books promotes reading for pleasure and helps foster a positive association with the library. It is designed to be a fun and collaborative literary event.”
