Baker Elementary School honored the nation’s veterans during a heartfelt, school-wide assembly on Friday, Nov. 5, 2025.

More than 25 veterans and active-duty service members – consisting of students’ family members and friends – were welcomed and recognized individually during the event.

Coordinated by a committee led by fourth grade teacher Nichole Trollman, the program offered students an opportunity to learn about the branches of the U.S. military and the significance of military service. Members of Boy Scout Troop 366 presented the American flag and fourth graders demonstrated how to properly fold the flag and explained the meaning behind each fold.

Musical tributes added to the ceremony’s significance. USCHS senior Ray Lindstrom performed “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and under the direction of Sarah Shoemaker, a fourth-grade ensemble sang “Sing,” offering a moving salute to those who served.

The gym was decorated with red poppies crafted by Baker students. Art teacher Heather Herbay explained that red poppies symbolize remembrance and honor for veterans – a tradition inspired by the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields,” in which poppies grew on battlefields after the war.

The program also featured a keynote address by Sergeant Robert Lane, a Baker parent, who shared reflections on service, sacrifice, and the importance of honoring veterans.

At the conclusion of the assembly, Baker students enthusiastically applauded the visiting veterans and expressed their gratitude for their service to the country.
