Fort Couch reaches science bowl final four

By reaching the final four, the Fort Couch team earned $300 for the school's science program and small awards for each team member. The team was coached by Jason O’Roark, gifted education and accelerated math teacher.
“They worked well as a team, gained confidence throughout the competition, and learned a lot of science along the way,” Mr. O’Roark said.
Three teams from Fort Couch Middle School, 15 students in total, competed in the event.
The WPASB is one of many regional competitions held for middle and high school teams across the country to select participants for the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl, an annual nationwide competition to promote science, technology, engineering and math. Middle and high school students compete as teams in an action-packed quiz bowl format.
According to the Western Pennsylvania Science Bowl website, “often known as the Super Bowl of science, Regional Science Bowls provide the perfect opportunity for middle and high school students interested in STEM to compete for the chance to represent their school at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.”
Teams consist of four to five students and one or two adult coaches. Questions are multiple choice or short answer and come from the following categories: biology, chemistry, earth and space science, energy, mathematics and physics.
