Student club hosts clothing swap
According to earth.org, fast fashion generates more than 92 million tons of textile waste annually – ranking it among the 15 biggest environmental problems of 2024. A student-led club at Upper St. Clair High School is doing its part to create change. The Fashion Club held its first clothing swap event on May 30.
“A clothing swap is where kids bring in clothes they no longer wear in order to exchange them for other clothes brought in by classmates,” Sarah Spencer, rising senior and Fashion Club co-president, said. “It was created in the spirit of reuse and repurpose while bringing attention to the negative effects that fast fashion trends may have on teen's mental health and on our overall environment.”
With approximately 25 participants, club leaders proclaimed the inaugural event a huge success.
“It was successful, and kids reached out to the club members afterward to say that they would like to participate if one is held at the beginning of the next school year,” Sarah said.
Another clothing swap as well as other educational events are planned for the upcoming school year.
“Next year the club hopes to continue by not only hosting another clothing swap but by exploring fashion design in more detail, the fashion/retail industry, and the effects that fashion has on our mental health,” Sarah said. “We also plan to learn more about our school's various cultural fashion identities, and identify ways in which the fashion industry impacts our environment.”
Launched in January 2024, the purpose of the high school’s Fashion Club is to explore fashion design while learning about the positive and negative effects of the fashion/retail industry. In addition to Sarah, club leaders include rising seniors Ella Mackovich and Valentina Sobarzo. Dr. Jennifer Kirk, school counselor, serves as faculty sponsor and Mrs. Nikki Colella, family and consumer science teacher, has provided additional support and guidance.
