Guitarist places first at music competition

An Upper St. Clair guitarist placed first in the Crescendo International Music Competition. Aanya Jha, a seventh grader at Fort Couch Middle School, performed on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024, at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This marks her second first place honor in the competition.Aanya, age 12, began playing the guitar at age 7 and currently participates in orchestra at Fort Couch Middle School, under the direction of Ms. Karen Chisholm.
Based on her performance, Aanya now has the opportunity to participate in Crescendo’s International Student Exchange Program. The program enables young musicians to perform in recitals with students from the most prestigious music schools and universities around the world, network with other musicians, attend master classes and lectures by renowned musicians, and experience different cultures.
In addition to music, Aanya is involved with the USC Robotics Club. Her team, Blue Biohazardz, recently placed third in the regional competition and is preparing for the state championships. She represented Boyce Middle School in the 2023 Western Pennsylvania Regional Spelling Bee and also enjoys playing tennis.
The Crescendo International Music Competition is open to students ages 4-24. Competition is open to junior, intermediate and advanced levels for all instrumentalists, vocalists, duets and chamber orchestra.
The first round of the competition includes a live or video recording evaluation. Successful candidates are invited to perform in the second round at recitals in New York City. Students have the opportunity to win monetary prizes ranging from $150 for third place to $1,000 for the grand prize. Decisions on monetary awards are based on accumulated audition score, composition complexity and contestant’s artistic maturity.
Crescendo International Music Competition is a youth music competition held annually since 2007. Its mission is to inspire individuals to pursue their passion for music through involvement in competitions, master classes and other educational programs.
