An Upper St. Clair seventh grader is headed to the USA Gymnastics Men’s and Women’s Development Program National Championships. Avery Irvin, a student at Fort Couch Middle School, will compete against the top seven girls from each of the eight regions in the country.

The National Championships are set for May 10-12, 2024, in Daytona Beach, Florida. To qualify, Avery placed among the top seven in her age group at the 2024 Level 9 & 10 Region VII Championship gymnastics meet, held April 11-14, 2024, at Pennsylvania State University. Region VII encompasses Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Avery, who trains at X-cel gymnastics club in Cranberry, was introduced to the sport of gymnastics at age 3 and started competing at age 5. She practices 20 hours a week and competes in the all-around, which includes the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

“Avery loves gymnastics because it pushes her to set goals and work hard to achieve them,” Jamie Irvin, Avery’s mom, said. “She also loves all of the friendships she has made in the gym.”

Outside of gymnastics, Avery likes to run track and enjoys hanging out with her friends. Her parents are Jamie and Matthew. She has a twin sister, Teddi, and a younger brother, Cole.
