Sixth grader earns silver in Great Race age group

Upper St. Clair sixth grader Juliette Hirzel placed second in the 12-13 age group at the 46th annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race. The event was held on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.The minimum age to participate in the 10K is 12 years old. At 12 years and 20 days old, Juliette was among the youngest to compete in this year’s event. She finished the 6.2-mile course with a time of 55:59, placing her in the top third for all women runners.
The Great Race started in 1977 and is the largest 10K race in Pennsylvania. The race starts at Frick Park in Squirrel Hill and ends at Point State Park. This year’s event attracted over 7,000 runners.
Juliette is looking forward to her next race at the end of October, which will be a 10K event as part of the Marine Corps Marathon. That race will start in Washington, D.C. and end in Arlington, Va.
