Junior named World Affairs Council Fellow

In this role, Lucia is looking forward to working and collaborating with others to help advocate for Pittsburgh youth.
“What excited me about the fellowship opportunity is that I’ll be able to have the opportunity to work with fellow diverse voices,” Lucia said. “Advocating and speaking on behalf of other communities is something I love to do.”
The World Affairs Council offers three main conferences during the year: the Emerging Global Leaders Conference in the spring, Camp Global Minds in early summer, and the World Affairs Institute in the fall. As a fellow, Lucia will assist in the planning and coordination of each of the events. She believes her experiences at Upper St. Clair High School have prepared her for this new role.
“In November of 2022, I was able to collaborate with several teachers to work on our school's Global Education Week. This project involved planning a school-wide Global Education Fair in which we involved nearly all of the school’s clubs,” she said. “I learned that using your teacher resources and collaborating together allows for windows of opportunity to be opened that would never have existed before.”
Lucia was named a National African American Recognition Program Scholar by the College Board for her academic achievements and was recently inducted into the National Honor Society. She is an active member of Student Council and serves as the secretary/treasurer of the Class of 2024. Lucia is a member of the Speech & Debate team, Pantheon Choir and the Black Student Union. Last fall, she started a new club at the high school titled, Books around the World.
The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of key international issues that affect the community and the world. In 2023, the council is focused on the issues of global migration, women and girls, and climate action.
The organization’s Youth Fellowship program is a leadership and career development program that provides high school students with hands-on educational and professional development. Through the fellowship, students have the opportunity to work alongside full-time staff members, other fellows and board members, external partners, and other change-makers in the Pittsburgh community to lead the future of global learning in Pittsburgh and beyond.
