Feb. 23, 2023

Bee Qualifiers
Three Upper St. Clair sixth graders recently qualified to advance to the national and international levels of the History Bee, Geography Bee and Science Bee competitions. Arjun Kairi and Max Reyes placed first in the History and Science bees, respectively, and Avik Pandey placed second in the Science Bee. In addition, Max placed third in the History Bee, qualifying for national and international competitions. With a third-place finish, Arjun qualified for nationals in the Geography Bee.

The Pennsylvania Winter Regional Finals for the History, Geography and Science bees, sponsored by the International Academic Competitions, were held on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023, at Greater Latrobe Senior High School. The tournament is open to students in kindergarten through grade eight.

The bees are buzzer-based quiz competitions for elementary, middle and high school-aged students throughout the United States. The competition is categorized by several grade-level divisions: Varsity, grades 11 and 12; Junior Varsity, grades 10 and younger; 8th Grade Division; 7th Grade Division; 6th Grade Division; and Elementary School Division, which includes all students in grade five and younger.

Arjun, Max and Avik are Boyce Middle School students who competed in the 6th Grade Division. Each of the bees is composed of three competition stages, including the Online Regional Qualifying Exam, the Regional Finals, and the National Championships.

This marks the second year in a row that Arjun and Avik will compete at the National History Bee and National Science Bee, respectively. Last year, competing at the elementary level, both students advanced to the national quarterfinals. Last year, Max qualified for the national level of competition for the National Science Bee, but opted not to go.

The National History, Geography and Science bees will be held June 1-4, 2023, in Arlington, Va. The International History Olympiad will take place July 23-31, 2023, in Rome, Italy. The International Environmental Science Olympiad is set for July 12-22, 2023, in Quito and Tena, Ecuador. The date and location for the International Geography Championships have not been announced.
