11 earn perfect scores at math competition
This year’s CalcuSolve events brought together more than 200 seventh and eighth grade students and over 300 fifth and sixth graders from Allegheny County. Students worked individually and in groups to complete challenging math problems in a timed setting.
Earning perfect scores from Fort Couch Middle School were eighth graders Emma Eannarino and Jonah Zahalsky, along with seventh graders Hope Waldron, Raana Parchuri, and John Whitman.
Six Boyce students earned perfect scores, including sixth graders Claire Dietiker, Bernard Huang, Will Kreizenbeck, Owen Maher, Avik Pandey and Lyman Thomson.
In addition, four Boyce students were among the 21 who tied for third place. Earning bronze were sixth graders Axes Chilton, Benjamin Fang and Vivek Sattuluri, as well as fifth grader Brayden Wong.
Serving as academic coaches were gifted education/accelerated math teachers Jason O’Roark, grades 7-8, and Stacie Paronish, grades 5-6.
“Our Boyce CalcuSolve team did an amazing job,” Mrs. Paronish said. “Out of the 12 students who participated, 10 students placed individually, and all three Boyce Teams placed in the team competition, so every Boyce student left with an award.”
In the grade 5-6 team competition, Boyce’s Team 1 placed first, while Teams 2 and Team 3 tied for second. Team 1 includes Claire Dietiker, Bernard Huang, Seth Pedretti and Lyman Thomson.
Earning second place were Team 2 – Axes Chilton, Ben Fang, Avik Pandey and Brayden Wong – along with Team 3 – Will Kreizenbeck, Mateo Lin, Owen Maher and Vivek Sattuluri. Third place was won by a team from the North Allegheny School District.
“Throughout the year, students practice higher-level math problems in preparation for events like CalcuSolve,” Mr. O’Roark said. “The students had to do well on a school qualifier to earn the opportunity to go to the regional competition.”
In addition to the students who earned perfect scores, other seventh and eighth grade team members representing Fort Couch Middle School included Josh Beitler, Matt Beitler, Augusta Bottonari, Felix Chen, Aaron Jiang, Cynthia Shen and Joey Wyse.
