History Bowl
A team of Fort Couch Middle School students placed first in the annual regional History Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, at the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh's Strip District. Eighth graders Claire Birmingham, Alexa Galbraith and Kiran Khurana earned top honors in the middle school division (6-8) – marking back-to-back History Bowl wins for Fort Couch Middle School.

The event, sponsored by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, brings together hundreds of local students from dozens of school districts for a fun and experiential competition. History Bowl requires participants to use the museum's collection to answer local trivia, collaborate/problem solve, and demonstrate creative writing skills.

The Upper St. Clair students were led by Thomas Yochum, gifted education coordinator.

"Our students learned facts about the city and its luminaries, but also began to appreciate Pittsburgh's cultural heritage across so many fields," Mr. Yochum said. “Everyone who prepared and participated knows that our region features prominently in sports pages, art museums, and dinner tables across the world.”

In the weeks leading up to the event, Fort Couch students prepared by participating in intra-school Pittsburgh trivia competitions and researching local history and lore.

“The girls who won needed to know about everything from the French & Indian war to Mario Lemieux's career highlights,” Mr. Yochum said. “I'm proud of their accomplishment and the teamwork and creativity that put them over the top.”

Representing Upper St. Clair were two teams from Boyce Middle School and four teams from Fort Couch Middle School. The competition includes an elementary division for grades 4-5 and a middle school division for grades 6-8.
