Five advance to state DECA competition

Five Upper St. Clair High School students were among the top performers at the 2023 DECA District III Career Development Conference on Nov. 29, 2023, at Duquesne University. The following students now advance to the state-level competition:

 

• High score: Personal Financial Literacy: Tanvi Kallur, grade 10
• First Place – Principles of Finance: Colin Liang, grade 12
• Second Place – Entrepreneurship: Ava Coury, grade 9
• Third Place – Entrepreneurship: Shreya Shokeen, grade 11
• Third Place – Principles of Finance: Mana Barimani, grade 10

This marks the inaugural year for DECA at Upper St. Clair High School. Christina Guarnaccio, English teacher, serves as the faculty sponsor. 

The 2023 DECA District III Career Development Conference was hosted by the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center and the School of Business. About 225 students from seven local school districts, including Bethel Park, Freeport Area, Highlands, Norwin, Taylor Allderdice, Upper St. Clair and Valley high schools, participated in the event.

The Pennsylvania DECA Association Career Development Conference is set for Feb. 21-23, 2024, in Hershey, Pa.

With over 4,700 students in over 80 chapters across the commonwealth, Pennsylvania DECA prepares students for college and careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and business management. DECA provides students with opportunities to participate in more than 50 competency-based competitive events, scholarships, educational conferences, campaigns, initiatives, and school-based enterprises.
