Matthew Bordenstein
An Upper St. Clair High School junior has been selected as a 2023 Carson Scholar. Matthew Bordenstein will receive a $1,000 scholarship, medal and a certificate at the Annual Carson Scholars Awards Banquet on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at Acrisure Stadium.

“Matthew Bordenstein was chosen because they demonstrated the highest standards of academic achievement, integrity, civic and social responsibility,” Rachel Brown, scholarship director for the Carson Scholars Fund, said.

Matthew serves the Pittsburgh area as an ambassador for Bookworm Global, a teen-led organization that donates gently-used books and educational resources to children in underserved communities. He has collected and donated more than 4,000 books over the last two years.

At Upper St. Clair High School, Matthew is involved with the Leadership Academy, Jewish Student Union and the Business & Finance Club. He also serves as a Junior Mentor, assisting ninth grade students with the transition to high school. Outside of school, he is a volunteer in Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh, a community-based program that brings together people of diverse abilities and interests.

Founded by Ben Carson, neurosurgeon and former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Carson Scholars program recognizes talented and dedicated students in grades 4 to 12 who are committed to making a difference in their communities.
