Middle schools earn top marks in math

Boyce Middle School sixth graders and Fort Couch Middle School seventh graders placed second in Pennsylvania and first in the five-county region in the recent Pennsylvania Mathematics League (PML) contest.

For the sixth-grade contest, Boyce Middle School placed second among the 47 participating schools throughout Pennsylvania and first among schools in the region that includes Allegheny, Blair, Butler, Cambria and Washington counties.

Among the top 63 students in the commonwealth, 13 are Boyce students, including Claire Dietiker, Bernard Huang, Will Kreizenbeck, Mateo Lin, Brayden Wong, Seth Pedretti, Divya Singh, Lyman Thomson, Max Belczyk, Emily Chen, Owen Maher, Avik Pandey and Roshan Shreesai Senthilkumar.

Five of the top seven students in the five-county region are Boyce students – Claire Dietiker, Bernard Huang, Will Kreizenbeck, Mateo Lin, Brayden Wong.

Fort Couch seventh graders tied for the second highest score among 38 schools throughout Pennsylvania. Among the top 44 students statewide were John Whitman, Nate Del, Aaron Jiang, Raana Parchuri and Joey Wyse.

Fort Couch topped the charts at the regional level and two of the top four scores were earned by seventh graders John Whitman and Nate Del.   

At the eighth-grade level, Josh Beitler scored among the top 37 from 39 participating schools statewide.

Middle school students were given 30 minutes to solve 35 questions – ranging from simple and straightforward to complex math problems. The school’s team score – comprised of the school’s top five scores – is reported to the PML.

The PML specializes in conducting math contests designed to stimulate student interest and confidence in mathematics.
