Six named 2022-23 Scholars by the College Board
Junior Lucia Miles was named a National African American Recognition Program Scholar. Seniors Ava Keating, Sarah Robert, Benjamin Rush and Elisa Tucker, along with junior Grace Atencio were named National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars.
Lucia is an active member of Student Council and currently serves as the secretary/treasurer for the Class of 2024. An officer on the Speech & Debate team, Lucia qualified to compete in policy debate at the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament last year. She is a member of the Pantheon Choir and the Black Student Union. She recently started a new club at the high school titled, Books around the World.
Ava is a member of the girls’ basketball team, Natural Helpers and National Honor Society. She previously served as a Junior Mentor and a Buddy with the Miracle League of South Hills. Ava has also served as a CCD aide through her church.
A Junior Mentor, Grace serves as a president of Students Demand Action, a student-led club committed to ending gun violence in the United States. She is also a member of Future Business Leaders of America, and plays on the varsity girls golf team.
A member of the varsity softball team, Sara devotes much of her time to clubs and organizations that help and support others in her school community. She served as a Junior Mentor and is the senior leader of the school’s Natural Helpers group. Sarah is a member National Honor Society, Student Council, Best Buddies and Stand Together, a club that focuses on mental health awareness.
This past summer Ben was selected to participate in the Experiencing Architecture program at the University of Pittsburgh. The four-week program is intended for high school students pursuing a career in architecture. He is a member of the Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship Club, National Honor Society and the varsity golf team.
Elisa, who is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program, currently serves as president of the school’s Spanish Club and is a member of National Honor Society, USC Robotics Club and the varsity softball team. She is planning on pursuing a career as an occupational therapist.
The College Board’s four National Recognition Programs award academic honors to underrepresented students. The four programs include National African American Recognition Program; National Hispanic Recognition Program; National Indigenous Recognition Program; and National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program.
Although the National Recognition Program Scholar is not a scholarship award, students can include this academic honor in their college and scholarship applications.
Students who identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Indigenous, or attend high school in a rural area or small town; have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; and have excelled on the PSAT, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams may be eligible.
