Fifth grader selected for Team Pennsylvania
Zach Breneman, a fifth grader at Boyce Middle School, has been selected to play for Team Pennsylvania this summer in The Brick, an invitational ice hockey tournament in Edmonton, Alberta. Zach, who will play left wing, was selected after a series of tryouts.
Team Pennsylvania is made up of the top players from Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and southern New Jersey. Both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers sponsor the Team Pennsylvania Brick team.
According to the Team Pennsylvania website, “The Brick Tournament is the most prestigious event for hockey players at the 10 and under age level. Select teams from all over the North American continent attend this renowned summer tournament.”
Zach’s age group was set to play in the tournament last year, but was delayed a year due to COVID-19. The Brick tournament is set for June 29-July 3 at the Ice Palace at the West Edmonton Mall and River Cree arenas.
Team Pennsylvania will participate in tournaments in Pittsburgh and Chicago before heading to Edmonton.
During the regular season, Zach plays for Pittsburgh Pens Elite and also participates in the Upper St. Clair Junior Panthers hockey program. He is excited to visit a new city and compete against great players from all over North America.
