Junior named to national advisory council for mental health awareness
An Upper St. Clair High School junior has been named to the Work2BeWell National Student Advisory Council. Marina Gzikowski will work with other student leaders from across the nation to increase mental health awareness.
The National Student Advisory Council provided an opportunity for Marina to further her passion for supporting mental health initiatives. At Upper St. Clair High School, she is a co-founder of Mending Mindsets, a student club that aims to increase awareness of mental health.
The Work2BeWell National Student Advisory Council is a group of teens dedicated to the Work2BeWell program and its vision of empowering teens to thrive through access to mental health resources, authentic connections with peers and educators and digital platforms for resiliency.
According to the organization’s website, “the NSAC is committed to making mental health a top priority in schools and communities across the nation through access, education and activation.”
As a National Advisory Council member, Marina will represent Pennsylvania students and join a group of 31 other teen council members, from around the country. They will be involved in using their voice to amplify the W2BW movement, including planning summits/events, sharing their voice and opinions on a variety of mental health topics, participating in Talk2BeWell Podcasts and/or advocating for legislation locally and nationally.
“I am really excited about the number, quality and diversity of this year's National Student Advisory Council applicants! Because of these factors, we chose to increase the size of the NSAC by 72% (31 total members compared to 18 last year).” Jawanza Hadley, Work2BeWell director, said. “Their desire to advocate for leadership, mental health and wellness, passion to reduce stigma, and to support teens will help W2BW to move toward fulfilling its vision: All teens have better mental health support and increased emotional well-being.”
Marina and other advisory council members are expected to attend at least one virtual meeting each month as well as additional team meetings.
