USCHS recognized for sportsmanship
In its 25th year of existence, the purpose of the sportsmanship program is to promote sportsmanship in the schools and to reward those schools that best demonstrate the elements of good sportsmanship.
“This is a credit to everyone and it is truly a team accomplishment. From administration, coaches, athletes, kids, custodians, security…….it takes a village,” Dr. Kevin Deitrick, director of athletics said. “This is something the community can feel really proud of – winning on and off the court.”
Upper St. Clair High School will be recognized during the WPIAL Sportsmanship Summit on Nov. 17, 2021, at the Heinz History Center and Sports Museum. A PIAA sportsmanship banner will be presented to USC student-athletes at that time.
The selection process was based on the fall, winter, and spring seasons of the 2020-21 school year. Schools were eligible to be nominated through either a self-assessment, by another school, or by an officials’ chapter. The WPIAL Sportsmanship Award Committee then met to discuss the nominees, with a maximum of five schools eligible to be honored for their good sportsmanship.
“I was also proud to learn that Upper St. Clair High School was nominated by two other schools for this recognition,” Dr. Timothy Wagner, principal, said. “This is a wonderful testament to our student-athletes' interactions with their peers, within and outside Upper St. Clair.”
2020-2021 Sportsmanship Award winners include Derry Area, Hampton Township, Laurel, Moon Area and Upper St. Clair high schools.
