Fifth grader earns honorable mention in writing & arts contest

Mira Murthy
A Boyce Middle School fifth-grader was recently recognized for her work in the Fifth Annual Mahatma Gandhi Creative Writing and Art Contest. Mira Murthy earned Honorable Mention honors for her entry of artwork that contained poetry.

The event was conducted as part of the 2021 Mahatma Gandhi Birthday Celebration organized by the Alliance for Humanitarian Initiatives, Nonviolence & Spiritual Advancement in partnership with Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion at Carnegie Mellon University. As an Honorable Mention awardee, Mira will receive a backpack for her efforts.

The contest, open to students in grades 5-8, asked young writers and artists to reflect on challenges to American democracy, what Mahatma Gandhi would have done to protect, strengthen, and support our democracy, and why Gandhi would have taken such action. The students also had to reflect on the actions that they have taken until now or will take in the future that mirror Gandhi's commitment to building and sustaining democracy in the United States and the world. Submissions could include creative writing, poetry or creative artwork.
