Art teacher presents at national conference
More than 400 teachers registered for Mrs. Herbay’s presentation, “How to Rock the Power of Paper, Scissors, Glue & A Pencil.” The idea for the presentation emerged from the lesson planning she did last spring during quarantine.
“I discovered innovative ways to use simple materials students would have at home and that is what I shared with my colleagues,” Mrs. Herbay said. “I wanted my students to be excited about their artmaking and to see that they could still create many interesting and different pieces of artwork with these simple materials.”
Mrs. Herbay hopes her presentation had an impact on her colleagues as they all continue to creatively respond to the challenges of teaching art during a pandemic.
“Another goal of my presentation was to open the minds of my fellow art teachers to creatively consider how to use art mediums in different ways in order to discover hidden benefits they may never have considered,” she said.
Motivated by her previous attendance at the national convention, Mrs. Herbay cherished the opportunity to connect with other art teachers.
“When I attended presentations two years ago at the NAEA National Convention I was inspired and challenged to one day reciprocate and share ideas of my own,” Mrs. Herbay said. “I enjoyed presenting to my colleagues because it gave me the opportunity to interact and make connections with art teachers from all over the country who are also passionate about art education.”
Mrs. Herbay holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and K-12 art education certification from Carlow University. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts Education at Ohio State University.
A resident of Mt. Lebanon, Mrs. Herbay and her husband, Todd, have four children – Ben, Sam, Jon and Annie.
