Two qualify to compete in National Chemistry Olympiad
Two Upper St. Clair High School students recently qualified to advance in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. Senior Hakan Guven and sophomore Phillip Markovitz are among approximately 1,000 high school students who will complete the three-part exam on April 17, 2021.
Hakan and Phillip were sponsored by Mrs. Laura Marks, Upper St. Clair High School science teacher.
Twenty of the top scoring students from the National Exam are invited to a two-week study camp held in June. Students receive intensive coaching and rigorous academic training in all branches of chemistry. Four students are selected by a combination of objective and subjective evaluations as the representatives of the United States team at the International Chemistry Olympiad set for July 24-Aug. 2, 2021.
The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad is a multi-tiered chemistry competition for high school students. Sponsored by the American Chemical Society since 1984, the competition’s purpose is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry.
