Boyce students reach Shakespeare contest finals
A group of Boyce Middle School sixth graders advanced to the finals in the 26th Annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest at the Pittsburgh Public Theater. Selected to perform a scene from “Hamlet” at the Showcase of Finalists on Monday, Feb. 17, were Logan Campbell (Horatio), Ben Todd (Marcellus) and Leo Goodworth (Bernardo). Leo was unable to perform Monday evening; therefore, Alex Todd, grade nine, substituted as Bernardo.
Five other scenes/monologues performed by Upper St. Clair students earned Honorable Mention.
- Boyce, grade 6: Eliana Doyle (Juliet) and Anoushka Barve (Nurse), “Romeo & Juliet”
- Boyce, grade 6: Kaia Petrick (Bottom), Sara Gillespie (Flute) & Pritika Gupta (Quince), “A Midsummer Night's Dream”

In total, 52 Upper St. Clair students competed in the Shakespeare Monologue and Scene Contest – 29 from Boyce Middle School, 19 from Fort Couch Middle School and four from Upper St. Clair High School.
More than 1,000 area students from 110 schools competed in the preliminary rounds of the Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest. Over 10 days, contestants performed monologues and/or scenes they had chosen from the works of William Shakespeare. Students in grades 8 – 12 competed in the Upper Division while grades 4 – 7 competed in the Lower Division.
Contestants present their pieces in front of a panel of judges, and those who advance to the final round of the contest have the opportunity to perform at the Showcase of Finalists. Judging criteria include understanding of the text, emotional connectedness, character development, physical and vocal performance, and pacing and the interaction amongst the actors in a scene.
All participants receive a contest t-shirt and a voucher for two complimentary tickets to a Public Theater production.
