Mrs. Barnes

Welcome to my teacher page!

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year at Upper Saint Clair High School.  Prior to working for the Upper Saint Clair School District, I was a special education teacher at Hopewell High School, and an emotional support teacher in the Ambridge School District.  I currently teach English 9, and I also co-teach a section of English 9 with Mrs. Robbebaro.  I reside in Wexford with my husband and new daughter Isabella.

Primary areas of study in Academic English 9 are literature, composition, oral communication, and language skills. Literature study includes the five major genres: short story, novel, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. The focus is on acquisition of reading comprehension skills and the ability to identify and analyze the characteristics of each genre. Using the process approach to writing, students write compositions in the informational, explanatory, argumentative, narrative, and creative modes. To develop their oral communication skills, students make both formal and informal presentations. Language skills include regular vocabulary study and a review of basic grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
