BFA in Voice: Indiana University of Pennsylvania MFA in Musical Theater: Boston Conservatory Certification in Music Education: Indiana University of Pennsylvania
Greetings Streams Elementary Families!
It pleases me to introduce myself to the community of Upper Saint Clair School District. My name is Mr. Steven Cosnek and I come to you as your students’ new music teacher and choir instructor at the fourth-grade level. My years leading up to the arrival at Streams have been filled with various events and opportunities that shape my style of teaching.
My higher education began locally in 2005 when I studied at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania working towards my BFA in voice. After completing my studies in 2009, magna cum laude, I moved to Boston, MA in pursuit of a master’s degree in performance. I was accepted into the Boston Conservatory in 2010 as a candidate for their Masters in Music with an emphasis in musical theater and was conferred in 2012, in their first ever MFA in musical theater graduate class.
During my tenure living in the city of Boston, I sang professionally with various choral ensembles and was employed by the Church of the Advent as a member of their professional choir for six years until 2015. My professional acting career also encompassed regional credits around Boston working with non-profit organizations, such as the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, the Wheelock Family Theater, and Arts After Hours.
In 2014 and 2015 I traveled to Haiti, twice, to participate in a volunteer program teaching music to youngsters in rural Haitian communities, and jointly working to provide reliable and safe drinking water to surrounding communities where I taught. After my experiences teaching in Haiti, I returned back to the United States with a burning desire to teach and share my stories from abroad. I moved back to Pittsburgh in August of 2015 to begin my Post-Baccalaureate studies at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania earning my certification in music education.
All the while being back in Pittsburgh, I have involved myself with organizations as an artist and educator. I sing professionally with the Pittsburgh Camerata and teach as a part of the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus program, overseeing their Neighborhood Training program and teaching the Coraopolis-West location each fall and spring.
Your learners’ best interests will always be at the forefront of my intent. The work we will embark on will not only focus on musical literacy and fluency but the pursuit to spark curiosity, develop integrity, and promote individuality. The time we are together in the music room each week is a gift and I plan to make the most of every moment I share with them. The journey that lay ahead is one I set out on with great ambition and high expectations for myself.
Please reach out to me if you have questions, concerns, curiosities, or simply wish to say hello! I can be reached either by my classroom phone at ext. 6037 or by school email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
