Welcome to another great year of making music! Every child in the Boyce Band program receives 40 minutes per week of small-class lesson instruction, AND 45 minutes of full-ensemble practice.
Lessons are done on a "pull-out" basis. Students are pulled out from their EA classes for 40 minutes once a week to attend their instrument lesson class in the band room with other students in the same grade who play the same instrument. Band lessons do NOT rotate on the 6-day schedule; they are fixed to a particular day (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) This makes it easier for you and your child to remember when to go to lessons. There are also make-up spots scheduled throughout the week for students to use as well.
The band method book we use is: Sound Innovations For Concert Band, by Robert Sheldon, book 1. It's the same book we used in 4th grade band. All other printed materials will be supplied by the school. Students should have the necessary supplies for their instrument: reeds, valve oil, etc.
Full ensemble rehearsals are held BEFORE school, once a week as follows:
Lessons are for developing individual skills. Full ensemble rehearsals are for practicing concert repertoire for our winter and spring concerts. Regular attendance at BOTH lessons and rehearsals is necessary to maintain good progress. Students should strive to maintain a consistent home practice schedule of approximately 15 - 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times per week. Starting in the 2nd semester, honors band will be offered to those students who have consistently demonstrated superior weekly preparation and attendance.
