• Principals' Welcome

Mrs. PetersonWelcome to Fort Couch Middle School. We are excited and honored to have you and your child as members of our educational community. Fort Couch is an exemplary middle school as a three-time recipient of the Presidential Secondary Blue Ribbon Schools award and one of the first established middle schools. Our school is driven by our students' social, intellectual, emotional, moral and physical developmental needs. We meet these needs by implementing the five components of successful middle schools listed by the National Middle School Association: transition programs, interdisciplinary teaching, advisory programs, varied instruction and exploratory programs.

Parent involvement is an important aspect of our culture at Fort Couch. Together we will work to provide our students with numerous rewarding experiences. Our students are well prepared for their careers as high school students, as our superb teaching staff provides them with a quality education. The teachers are well versed in utilizing a variety of assessment tools and curricular resources to evaluate students' progress. In addition, they use diagnostic results to drive instructional initiatives. The teachers of Fort Couch routinely seek strategies to ensure the students' successful attainment of proficiency standards.

Mr. MathewsFort Couch Middle School exemplifies the eight essential elements noted by the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development (1989):

    • Small communities for learning within the larger school building
    • Core academic program for all learners
    • Successful experiences for all students
    • Empowerment for staff in making decisions about the experiences of middle level students
    • Teachers who are experts at teaching young adolescents
    • Improved academic performance fostered through health and fitness
    • Families re-engaged in the education of young adolescents
    • Schools that are connected with their communities

Clearly, Fort Couch Middle School is a wonderful and dynamic place for children to grow both as learners and individuals. Our goal is to not only uphold the rich tradition of academic and extra-curricular excellence but also build on our accomplishments to better prepare our students for the demands which will be bestowed upon them by 21st century society. We hope that you and your child find the time you spend at Fort Couch to be positive, exciting and filled with many rewarding experiences. Have a great year!

    Best wishes,
