2023-24 School Start Times
May 18, 2023
Dear USC Families.
We hope you are having a great week. It is hard to believe that the last day of school is only four weeks away. As I wrote to you last month, planning is already underway for the 2023-24 school year. Among the changes for next year will be new start/dismissal times throughout the District.
Last night, our School Board approved the proposed plan to revise the school start/dismissal times beginning this fall. This change is based on a growing body of scientific evidence that supports the importance of adequate sleep for the overall well-being and academic success of students.
The chart below includes the approved start/dismissal times for elementary, middle and high school students. These times are effective with the start of the 2023-24 school year.
While there has been overwhelming support from students and families regarding the start time change, we recognize that this may initially create logistical challenges for some families. We are committed to working with and supporting families as we all adjust to this new schedule.
A section of the District’s website is dedicated to the newly approved start/dismissal times. Among the information is a link to the video of last night’s presentation, a PDF of the presentation slides, and a Frequently Asked Questions page. This section will continue to be updated based on family feedback.
We are confident that this change will have a positive impact on the overall well-being and academic performance of our students. By prioritizing their sleep, we are investing in their success both inside and outside the classroom.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Rozzo
Superintendent of Schools
