Health Screening Programs

The following health screenings are mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. These screenings are performed by the certified school nurse and are not to be substituted for regular check-ups with your health care provider. You will be notified by mail with a referral form if your child has not met the guidelines for the screenings as set by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. The referral form is to be completed by your private health care provider and returned to the health office at your child's school.

 
  • Growth Screening - Height, Weight, and BMI (Body Mass Index) - is performed annually in grades K-12. You will receive the results by mail each year, which will include the Body Mass Percentile which is used as a guideline to help assess whether a person may be overweight or underweight. (Visit the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics for more information on BMI.)
     
  • Vision Screening is done annually in grades K-12. This screening is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination by an eye care specialist. If your child fails this screening, a referral will be mailed home.
     
  • Hearing Screening is performed annually in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 7,and 11. This screening is not a substitute for an audiology examination by your health care provider. If your child fails this screening, a referral will be mailed home.
  • Scoliosis Screening is done in grades 6 and 7. The purpose of the screening is to detect any abnormal curvature of the spine.  If your child fails this screening, a referral will be mailed home.
