HS STEAM Academy - 9 learning experiences

Below is a list of experiences offered this summer for Upper St. Clair students entering grades 9-12 this fall. You may select as few, or as many sessions as you’d like! Please note that all sessions can be tied to the USCHS STEAM Pathway. For every hour of participation in a Summer STEAM Academy event, a student can earn an hour toward STEAM Experiences in the STEAM Pathway.

SCIENCE SAFARI: Explore Animal Conservation Efforts

  • Date: Monday, June 10, 2024
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Cost:  $75
  • Location: Keystone Safari, Mercer County (The camp day will start and end at USCHS. Bus transportation to/from the location will be provided.)

Embarking on a STEAM-focused day trip to Keystone Safari offers students an engaging and educational experience within the realms of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The safari not only introduces students to the wonders of wildlife biology but also provides insight into the advanced technologies employed in animal conservation efforts. Students will travel to Keystone Safari and explore a behind the scenes tour plus a ride through a conservation Safari. Overall, a day at Keystone Safari becomes a dynamic platform for students to connect STEAM concepts with the captivating world of wildlife conservation.


PASTA PERFECTION: Take a Culinary Journey to Italy

  • Date: June 17 – 20, 2024
  • Time: 1 – 2:30 p.m.
  • Cost:  $60
  • Location: USCHS 

Ciao! Let’s take a culinary journey to Italy! Learn how to make pasta from scratch using flour, eggs, and a little creativity! In this class, students will learn the secrets behind crafting the perfect pasta from scratch, mastering various shapes, textures, and flavors. Mangiamo!


ROOTING FOR NATURE: A Trip to Phipps Conservatory

  • Date: Tuesday, June 18, 2024
  • Time: 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Cost:  $50
  • Location: Phipps Conservatory, Oakland (The camp day will start and end at USCHS. Bus transportation to/from the location will be provided.)

This summer STEAM experience invites students to a field trip to Phipps Conservatory in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Participants will be transported to Phipps Conservatory for a guided tour, time for exploration at Phipps, and a picnic lunch at Flagstaff Hill. Participants will pack a lunch.

 


TO THE MOON AND BACK: An Immersive Space Experience

  • Date: June 18, 2024
  • Time: 9 a.m. – noon
  • Cost:  $50
  • Location: Moonshot Museum, Pittsburgh (The camp day will start and end at USCHS. Bus transportation to/from the location will be provided.)

3-2-1…..Blast off!!!! Join us for an out-of-this world experience! You will embark on an informative mission at the Moonshot Space Museum to learn about Cosmic Careers. You will receive a private science show focused on the 21st century space industry. Time will be allotted to explore the Museum and have a private Q&A with a space industry professional from Astrobotic. You will explore the emerging space industry careers that will build our future on the Moon.


BATS, BALLS, AND BRIDGES: A Trip to PNC Park

  • Date: June 19, 2024
  • Time: 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Cost:  $50
  • Location: PNC Park, Pittsburgh (The camp day will start and end at USCHS. Bus transportation to/from the location will be provided.)

Join us for an engaging workshop at PNC Park, where we'll explore the intersection of STEAM and sports while watching a Pittsburgh Pirates afternoon game. This event offers a hands-on learning experience about the science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics behind baseball. Discover how STEAM principles influence everything from pitching mechanics to stadium design, all in a fun and educational setting. Perfect for students looking to blend education with the excitement of a live baseball game.


MIND MAZE MARATHON: Unlock Your Problem-Solving Skills

  • Date: June 25, 2024
  • Time: 10:30 a.m. – noon
  • Cost:  $20
  • Location:  USCHS

This session is designed to provide an opportunity to enhance your problem-solving skills through a series of engaging puzzles, riddles, and brain-teasers. Each challenge, solved correctly, will earn you a raffle ticket with a chance to win an Upper St. Clair High School “Swag Bag” at the end. Whether you’re a seasoned puzzle solver or new to the world of riddles, this session offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and unlock your hidden potential as you enhance your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities!


THE WORLD OF ESPORTS: A Trip to Rezzanine (Bridgeville, PA)

  • Date: June 28, 2024
  • Time: noon – 3 p.m.
  • Cost:  $40
  • Location: Rezzanine, Bridgeville (upstairs of Phoenix Theater). Students will need to provide their own transportation to and from the event.

Welcome to the world of Esports. This STEAM-oriented experience will take place at the Rezzanine in Bridgeville. The Rezzanine is an esports complex that hosts many different types of events and activities. In this interactive experience, participants will learn what it takes to plan and host an esports tournament from forming brackets, advertising, and getting sponsorships. The participants will also plan and host a mini-tournament for that day.


SeaPerch Design Challenge: Build Your Own ROV!

  • Date: July 15 – 19, 2024
  • Time: 9 a.m. – noon
  • Cost:  $400
  • Location: USCHS

SeaPerch is an innovative national underwater robotics program that equips students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). During this week-long workshop, students will build the ROV and practice driving it underwater. The cost of this workshop includes the cost of the kit. Each student will build their SeaPerch ROV and get to keep it at the end of the week. Students may be interested in following up this workshop by competing in the local Pittsburgh SeaPerch competition in March 2025.


PHYSICS SKILLS: Summer Series

  • Date: Aug. 5 – 9, 2024
  • Time: 9 a.m. – noon
  • Cost:  $75
  • Location: USCHS

Prepare your child for success in physics class by making sure they have the skills and confidence that they need! Focus will be on: algebra skills, trigonometry skills, unit conversions, metric prefixes, the problem-solving method, graphing skills, and basic vector skills. Students will need to bring their Chromebook and a calculator for these sessions.
