Course Overview

    This course is designed to meet the needs of those students with a strong background in science and mathematics who intend to pursue science as a major at the college level in the fields of Engineering, Medicine, etc. The theoretical concepts of beginning chemistry as well as the mathematics are dealt with in greater depth in both lecture and laboratory work than in Academic Chemistry. This course followed by AP Chemistry in the junior year is meant to prepare the student for a rigorous freshman college chemistry course.


    The principal of this course is to provide a broad overview of the principles of chemistry and the reactivity of chemical elements and compounds. It is also hoped that students appreciate that chemistry is a field with a lively history and with important new developments on the horizon. The course will also provide some insight into the chemical aspects of the world around us. 
    Students will be thoroughly exposed to the chemical nature of matter and the theoretical intricacies of atoms and orbitals. Also presented will be a thorough treatment of chemical reactions, including how to recognize a chemical change, what “Driving Forces” appear to cause reactions to occur, and what a chemical equation means. The properties of aqueous solutions are discussed in detail, and careful consideration is given to precipitation and acid-base reactions. In addition oxidation-reduction reactions and electrochemistry is discussed. Finally students will develop real problem solving skills.
    Performance Tasks

    Through weekly laboratory experiments and regular problem sheet solutions, students will demonstrate critical thinking and scientific reasoning about the principles of chemistry and the reactivity of chemical elements and compounds.

    Course Objectives

    During this school year, students will meet many objectives introduced throughout the chapters in the course text. There are three basic objectives, however, that I will strive to help you achieve. They are:

    1. learn the facts, formulas and principles that compose chemistry (WHAT?)
    2. understand the basic concepts underlying the facts, formulas and principles (WHY?)
    3. develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, not only to use in chemistry but, by extension, to use in everyday life (HOW?)
