Japanese 1
Textbook: Kimono 1
Course Objectives
At the end of this course students will be able to:
- exchange information about themselves (their family, friends, plans , experiences, feelings, etc.) in Japanese
- master hiragana and be able to read written in hiragana
- give information in written form (hiragana) on the basis of personal information and experience
- learn about Japan ( geography, history, way of life, traditions, etc.)
Notes
Attendance and class participation
Class participation will be based on your participation in class.
Assignments
Assignments will be based on completion of worksheets given in class,
homework and neatness of your work as well. If you have a reason to be
excused from class ( ex. medical reasons, personal emergency, etc.), please
let me know in advance or as soon as possible so you will get these assignments.
Unit quizzes
You will have a small quiz in each unit, which will consist of ten to twenty
vocabulary words, phrases, or sentences introduced in that unit.
Unit tests
This is a performance test given at the end of each unit, which will be a
skit with a partner or group.
Or
instead of a performance test, you may have a written test of two or
three units together, which will be composed of three parts: vocabulary,
grammar, and reading.
Writing assignments
Writing assignments will be given at the end of each semester.
You will write about your family for the first semester and about your
trips or experiences for the second semester. They must be turned in on
time.
Oral interview
You will be given an oral interview at the end of each semester. It will
be a short conversation between student and teacher.

May Field Trip (to the nationality room at Pitt, Japanese/oriental store, and a
Japanese restaurant, and to attend some events if available)
