Readiness Activities: Our half-day program includes readiness activities in the areas of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. We work to meet the needs of all of the children by providing a multi-sensory approach (activities that include: visual, auditory and tactile skills) and an inquiry approach, which supports a child’s natural curiosity, and by customizing activities to meet a variety of learner levels.Math: Our math program is called Investigations by Scott Foresman /Addison Wesley.Throughout the program we use a variety of manipulatives and hands-on activities during "math workshop" for reinforcement and assessment of learning.
Reading: Our instruction in reading focuses on three main areas:
1. Comprehension: Comprehension is being able to understand, make connections, and retain what is being read.
2. Phonemic Awareness: Phonemic awareness is the process of hearing the sounds that the letters make.
3. Phonics: Phonics is adding the visual letter with letter sounds.Writing: We use the Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) program for correct letter and number formation. Your child will also learn how to compose thoughts into sentences and put them down on paper.Science: ASSET: Allegheny Schools Science and Education Technology. ASSET is an investigation; inquiry-based instructional approach with lots of hands-on involvement. We will study two ASSET Units : Trees and Push, Pull, Go!
Health: We are also excited about our Harcourt Health and Fitness program. Throughout the school year our students will be introduced to various units that help to instill good safety, health, and hygiene practices.Social Studies: Throughout the year we will learn about current events with our Weekly Reader magazines. We will also work on a variety of units such as: "Symbols of America" and "Community Helpers".
