    Course Description

    This course offers you the opportunity to improve your language skills in all modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. It also enables you to improve your writing skills and sense of language structure through a comprehensive verb tense review in order to prepare for college Spanish. Discussions on various cultural and historical topics, plus contemporary issues encourage you to express and defend your opinions. This is a challenging course that stresses fluency, accuracy and appreciation for the Spanish culture.

     

    Honors Spanish 5 – Course Outline

    Unit 1: The differences between men and women

    • Use of the present tense with 100% accuracy
    • Write an introductory letter to the teacher
    • Interpret articles on the differences between men and women (IPA)
    • Express and defend opinions about men and women in Interpersonal speaking assessment (IPA)
    • Role-play activities with situation cards
    • Write a letter to the editor of a magazine (IPA)
    • Complete an objective test with essay

    Unit 2: Stereotype of a Latin American Country

    • Use of the preterit tense with 80% accuracy
    • Interpret a reading about the history of drug trafficking in Colombia and understand the stereotype that emerged from it (IPA)
    • Role-play activities with situation cards
    • Understand how drug trafficking affected the soccer team in Colombia
    • Discuss whether a student from Colombia should be allowed to attend USC (IPA)
    • Write a letter to the editor of a sports magazine defending the soccer program in Colombia (IPA)

    Unit 3: The preterit vs. the imperfect tense

    • Use the preterit tense with 80% accuracy
    • Use the imperfect tense with 80% accuracy
    • Compare and contrast continuous past actions with completed past actions
    • Retell fairy tales
    • Role play with situations cards requiring the use of the two tenses
    • Present a three-minute narration about an important experience that changed your life
    • Synthesize speech at the paragraph level

    Unit 4: Immigrants in the United States

    • Watch the movie El Norte
    • Role-play with situation cards
    • Discuss U.S. immigration policies
    • Express and defend opinions about U.S immigration policies

    Unit 5: The Spanish Civil War

    • Discuss the political climate that let to the Spanish Civil War
    • Examine Pablo Picasso's Guernica
    • Watch and analyze the movie La Lengua de las Mariposas
    • Synthesize speech at the paragraph level
    • Complete an objective test with essay

    Unit 6: The future and condition of the world in which I live

    • Use the future tense with 80% accuracy
    • Use the conditional tense with 80% accuracy
    • Interpret articles about the world in which I live
    • Express and defend opinions about the future
    • Synthesize speech at the paragraph level
    • Role-play with situation cards
    • Write Journal Entries
    • Complete and objective test

    Unit 7: The subjunctive

    • Review the formation and use of the present subjunctive mood
    • Begin to us the imperfect subjunctive
    • Complete an objective test
    • Write a letter to a rising senior, offering advice about the course using the subjunctive mood
