• Fluency- reading a text with accuracy and expression. Improving reading fluency is a direct link to improving comprehension.

Comprehension: Reading comprehension skills and strategies are addressed in each class. We are specifically working on higher-level thinking, making inferences while reading, making predictions and connecting with the text.

Writing: Being able to respond to a text is key. After reading, the students are expected to reflect on what they read by writing a well-developed, thoughtful essay. One of the most important parts of the essay, is having the students use story evidence (specific details from the text) to support their topic sentence. Some of the essays the students have worked on involve character traits and theme.
