• Welcome to First Grade!
    First Grade

    Dear First Grade Family,

My name is Kellee Urso and I would like to welcome you and your family to first grade at Streams Elementary School. I hope that you have had a summer filled with sunshine and smiles.  I am very much looking forward to being your child’s first grade teacher and am excited to be sharing the 2021-2022 school year with you and your family! Our year together will be a very special time! I can’t wait to learn more about you and your first grade student and would like to tell you a little about myself.

I am very excited to say that this is my tenth year teaching in the Upper St. Clair School District. I began at Streams as a kindergarten teacher and then began teaching first grade the following year—and I am so excited to continue teaching my new first grade friends this year! I graduated from Duquesne University with a dual degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Instructional Technology. A little more about is that just like you, I also live in Upper St. Clair with my husband, Matthew, our four-year-old son Graham and our two-year-old daughter Mollie. We love being a part of the community and I love seeing so many smiling student faces both inside and outside of our school home!  I feel so lucky to have worked with so many tremendous students and their families and look forward to making new memories with all of the students and families at Streams this year!

This is such an exciting time for students, families, and teachers, as first grade is a time of new beginnings, of making friends, and of learning lots of new things each and every day that we spend together. Our school year will be filled with many wonderful experiences and opportunities for learning, growing, and lots of first grade smiles! We want our new friends to feel excited and ready for their first day and the very last thing that we want is for our little ones to be overwhelmed (or overloaded with supplies!) on our first day together. To help with this, we would like to invite you for a “Drive By-Drop Off” Wednesday, August 18th from 8:00am-2:00pm. On this day, we would ask you to drive by Streams, locate the “Mrs. Urso supply box” on the sidewalk in front of Streams, and “drop off” specific supplies. (Please see the attached list with specific details of which supplies can be “dropped-off” and which supplies your first grader should bring to school on his/her first day. (If you are unable to “drop-off” the supplies, feel free to send a few supplies at a time, each day that your child comes to school.)  We do ask that on this day, you simply drop off your child’s items but kindly ask that you do not enter the building.

I also would love to get to know your child a little better before our first day of school together. As you are your child’s first and best teacher, would you take a moment to write me a letter about your child? (What is your child like? What do you feel is important for me to know? How do you see your child as a learner? I would love to know how your child thinks, plays, and learns. Please include absolutely anything that you would like for me to know! ) I have also included a short “student information” sheet with this letter. If possible, please fill out the information sheet and write your letter to me so that you are able to bring both of these with you to the drive-by drop off on August 18th. (If you are unable to do this, please feel free to email both of these things to me.) Thank you for helping me begin to get to know you and your child before our school year together even begins!

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s learning this year! I’m looking forward to an amazing, special, wonderful year together!

I can't wait to see my sweetest new friends in our first grade family classroom. Our classroom is Room 214; please tell my new friend to look for the polka dots!
