• A Day at the REEC

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 5/17/2011 5:50:00 PM

On Tuesday, second grade spent the day at the Regional Environmental Education Center (REEC) at Boyce Mayview Park. Students hiked through the woods, learning about the different wild plants and history of the grounds. As they walked, they listened to the songs of the many types of birds that call the REEC their home. The students stopped at three stations to learn about these birds. They learned about the unique nests of different birds, the parts of a bird's body, and the way a beak's design can dictate what kind of food the bird eats. The students enjoyed the wet, but beautiful nature walk. Thank you to Mr. Cursi, Mrs. McKeever, Mrs. Rieker, and Mrs. Kowalski for their AWESOME help!!!

  • A Trip to Phipps

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 5/16/2011 3:00:00 PM

Today, our class joined Mrs. Dominick's class for a super fun field trip to Phipps Conservatory. We learned A LOT about both plants and butterflies. A definite highlight of the trip was visiting the butterfly garden. Students were able to see the beautiful insects up close. We even saw a couple of butterflies just emerging from their chrysalides. WOW! What a great way to end our week!

  • Author Visit

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 4/29/2011 3:00:00 PM

Today, Susan Castriota, an Upper St. Clair native and recently published author and illustrator, came to visit Eisenhower! We heard her read her new book, Wilson Gets Adopted, and watched her recreate some of the book's illustrations right before our eyes. Her presentation was so exciting and inspiring! Look for the Wilson coloring contest coming home this week.

  • A Symphony for Second Grade

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 4/15/2011 3:00:00 PM

Second graders from around the city attended a special performance at the Pittsburgh Symphony today! The conductor introduced each of the five families of instruments and then the performers played a piece that highlighted their instruments. The conductor even taught the audience how to conduct an orchestra! It was a great performance and Eisenhower's second graders were an AWESOME audience - they deserve a round of applause for their polite manners and respectful behavior!

  • Book Swap

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 4/14/2011 9:00:00 AM

Students spent some time today exchanging some of their favorite books for those of other Eisenhower students. The kids had fun "shopping" for some great new reads and really enjoyed the experience. Thanks to the PTA volunteers that made it happen! Happy Reading!

  • Parades, parties, and costumes...oh my!

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 10/29/2010 7:00:00 PM
What awesome costumes! A Steeler, a ninja, a baseball player, a 1920's flapper, an ugly doll, and even a Wii remote were among some of Room 101's costumes. Some were quite funny and some were down-right frightening. Either way, we had a super fun time marching in the school Harvest Parade and relaxing afterwards at our classroom party. The students made the coolest craft - a pumpkin made out of a roll of toilet paper - and played a few exciting games! Thank you to all of the parents who helped to dress the students, plan the party, and help run the games!

  • Jump Rope for Heart!

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 10/18/2010 9:00:00 PM

This afternoon, the students of Room 101 showed off their AMAZING jump roping skills! They performed some awesome tricks by themselves - crisscrossing, double and triple jumping, jumping backwards, and jumping with a partner! I was astonished! At the end, they took turns using a Double Dutch rope. Thank you Mrs. Stalder and Mrs. Pikras for being our official rope spinners today!

  • USC Log House Trip

Posted by Jennifer Waters on 10/14/2010 3:30:00 PM

Today, we went to the Upper St. Clair Log House. We visited the 1830 home along with half of Dr. Sankar's class for about an hour. While there, our docent - dressed in traditional pioneer clothing - told us about the history of the house, showed us real pioneer artifacts, and explained in detail how the pioneers lived. We talked about how the students' everyday lives differ from pioneer children's lives. The children loved pretending to churn butter, turning the spinning wheel, and laying in the hay and herb stuffed mattresses. It was an awesome day that brought to life our classroom lessons! Check out some pictures in the picture gallery!
