    Dear Parent(s)/ Guardian(s),

Welcome to first grade!  I am so pleased that your child will be in my class this year.  As summer is winding down I would like to introduce myself and tell you what’s in store for this exciting school year!

My name is Matthew Alloway.  I am beginning my 17th year as a first grade teacher in the Upper St. Clair School District.

As you may already know, first grade is a very important and busy place!  We will do many activities this year like:

    !  Read wonderful books

    !  Perform amazing science experiments

    !  Write magnificent stories

    !  Solve incredible math problems

!  Most of all- become good friends

Another reason that I am writing is to ask you to help me become a partner with you in your child’s education.  I know that my teaching must begin with making your child feel welcome in my classroom.  To help me do this, I would appreciate you taking a moment to write me a letter about your child.  This letter is meant to help me get to know your child.  Some ideas to include:  What is your child like?  What are your child’s interests?  What do you see as being your child’s strengths and areas of need?  How do you see your child as a learner and a person?

Please send the letter, in an envelope, to school with your child during the first week of school.  I look forward to learning about your child!  I am very eager to begin our work together and will always be available to discuss questions or concerns that you may have as the year progresses.  Enjoy the last few days of summer!

    Sincerely,

    Matthew Alloway
